The role

This is a role for someone who wants ownership. You'll drive the direction of our backend, set the technical bar, coach and mentor junior engineers, and have the opportunity to scale the quality of our backend to match the craftsmanship our apps are known for. If you've spent years building production systems and are ready to shape an entire backend practice rather than just ship tickets in one, this role is for you.

You'll be joining our data team to architect and build the backend systems that enable SCRL's expansion to the web, focusing on user accounts, subscription management, and cross-platform data synchronization — and you'll help define how we build everything that comes after.

What you will do

Technical leadership & team growth

• Set the technical direction and quality bar for our backend, from architecture down to code review standards.

• Mentor and coach junior engineers, growing the team's skills as we grow the platform.

• Raise the quality of our backend to match the craft and polish of our apps — monitoring, testing, reliability, developer experience, the works.

• Partner with product, data, and mobile engineers to translate ambitious product ideas into robust systems.

Core Infrastructure & APIs

• Design and build robust account systems supporting, among others, email/password authentication and cross-platform user management.

• Develop and maintain RESTful APIs for user data, project storage, and subscription management.

• Implement secure authentication flows across web and mobile platforms.

• Build scalable storage solutions for user projects and account data.

• Strengthen our content delivery backend that returns templates, stickers and other content to all our platforms (iOS, Android, Web).

• Ensure scalability and stability of our backend across all platforms and platform versions.

• Support AI service delivery to the apps, such as our template recommendation system to suggest the right templates for our users.

Subscription & Payment Systems

• Architect subscription management systems integrating with an external service for web payments.

• Implement subscription syncing across iOS, Android, and web platforms.

• Build subscription status validation and premium feature access controls.

• Develop subscription plan management (upgrades, downgrades, cancellations).

Data Security & Compliance

• Implement GDPR-compliant data handling including consent management, data takeout, and deletion requests.

• Ensure secure backup systems and data integrity across platforms.

• Build audit trails for subscription and account changes.

• Maintain data structure consistency across web and mobile platforms.

Platform Integration & Scaling

• Develop backend endpoints for mobile app account integration.

• Build systems for potential third-party integrations (Instagram connectivity, etc.).

• Optimize database performance and query efficiency for millions of users.

• Implement monitoring, logging, and error reporting systems.

You should have

Experience

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience, including time spent owning systems end-to-end in production at meaningful scale.

• A track record of leveling up the teams and codebases around you — through mentorship, code review, or setting technical direction.

Technical Expertise

• Backend Languages: Strong proficiency in Javascript, Typescript, or similar.

• Database design: Deep experience with both SQL and NoSQL databases, and confident data modeling for user accounts and subscriptions.

• API Development: Proven experience building RESTful APIs and understanding of API security best practices.

• Cloud Infrastructure: Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and infrastructure as code.

System Design & Architecture

• Scalable Systems: Experience building systems that handle millions of users and high-throughput scenarios.

• Payment Integration: Knowledge of payment processing, subscription billing, and financial data handling.

• Security: Understanding of authentication, authorization, data encryption, and GDPR compliance requirements.

Product & Business Understanding

• Subscription Apps: Experience with or strong interest in subscription-based app businesses and freemium models.

• Cross-Platform Thinking: Understanding of the complexities of syncing data and subscriptions across web, iOS, and Android.

• Data-Driven Approach: Comfortable working with analytics and ensuring proper event tracking for business insights.

Collaboration & Communication

• Team player: You work closely and generously with data engineers, frontend developers, and product teams.

• Clear communication: You can explain complex technical concepts to non-technical teammates, and make junior engineers better by working with you.

• Problem solving: Self-motivated with strong analytical and debugging skill
